Coastal Fire Centre Status Report for the week ending May 21, 202
Overview
With reduced fire danger on the coast, the Coastal Fire Centre is supporting the Provinces of Ontario and Manitoba and the Fort Nelson Fire Zone with coastal crews and support staff. As of May 22, the centre has exported 13 personnel to Ontario, 20 to Manitoba, and 21 to the Fort Nelson Zone. Out-of-province assistance and the mutual sharing of firefighting resources between B.C. and other Canadian jurisdictions is coordinated by the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC).
Recent rain has reduced the fire danger rating across most of the fire centre to very low, with sections of low in some inland areas and south east Vancouver Island. Cool and showery conditions are expected to continue until Sunday when an upper ridge will begin a warming and drying trend.
There have been 23 wildfires reported within the Coastal Fire Centre since April 1, 2025, compared with the 10-year average of 25 fires. It is too early to predict what type of fire season we will have here on the coast. This will depend on the amount of spring rain we receive, particularly in the key month of June.
While there are currently no open burning prohibitions within the Coastal Fire Centre's jurisdiction, we continue to caution the public with any use of open fire - including category 1 (campfires) - or engaging in any activity that could potentially cause a wildfire. Residents must check with their local authority before lighting any fire and follow their local bylaws.
