COFC Status Report for the week ending August 28, 2024

Overview

 The Coastal Fire Centre has received over 40mm of precipitation this week, resulting in all wildfires now classified as Being Held or Under Control. There were four new fire starts this period, all estimated to be under 0.01 hectares in size and classified as Out. There are currently 16 active fires in the Coastal Fire Centre.

 Effective August 28 at 12 p.m. noon PST, Category 1 campfires are now permitted across the Coastal Fire Centre. This includes the permitted use of tiki and other torches, as well as chimineas. Category 2 and 3 open burning remains prohibited, including the use of fireworks, sky lanterns, binary exploding targets, burn barrels or cages, and air curtain burners.  Ahead of the long weekend, the fire danger rating remains Low or Very-Low in most areas of the Coastal Fire Centre. However, temperatures are expected to increase and it is still important to continue using caution when engaging in any activity that could potentially cause a wildfire.
