CoFC Status Report for the week ending Aug 7, 2024
Overview
The Coastal Fire Centre has been responding to several new starts following a lightning event on the evening of August 5th. The warm and dry trend continues, and we are at the time of year where we'll continue to see more naturally caused wildfires as we've seen with the thirteen new starts in the Pemberton zone. So far this season on the Coast, the majority of our starts are suspected to be human caused. Human caused wildfires are 100% preventable and divert resources from naturally-caused fires.
We encourage the public to download the free BC Wildfire Service mobile app on any Android or iOS device and set “Saved Locations” notifications to be notified in real-time of wildfire activity within a selected geographic area. The photos and geographic information that British Columbians have been submitting this summer using the “Report” feature have been incredibly helpful to our staff and we want to thank public for being our partners in wildfire detection. You can also report a wildfire via the phone at 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 from a cell phone.
To help prevent human caused wildfires and protect public safety, campfires remain prohibited throughout the Coastal Fire Centre, with the exception of the Haida Gwaii Forest District. The campfire prohibition does not include the use of outdoor stoves. As per the Wildfire Regulation, an outdoor stove is a CSA-rated or ULC-rated device used outdoors for cooking, heat or ambiance that burns charcoal briquettes, liquid fuel or gaseous fuel, and has a flame height that is less than 15 cm tall. Category 2 and 3 open burning remains prohibited for the entire province.
