CoFC Status Report for the week ending July 31, 2024
Overview
The Coastal Fire Centre has seen a welcome reprieve from hot weather this week, with temperatures dipping slightly below seasonal and precipitation across the Centre. On Thursday and Friday, we will see a return to above-seasonal temperatures and drying conditions. The Friday forecast also predicts a risk of thunderstorm activity in the eastern Fraser Zone.
The Coastal Fire Centre continues to prioritize the Old Man Lake (V61401) wildfire in the South Island Zone, along with maintaining sufficient resources in the region for local preparedness and response.
We encourage the public to download the free BC Wildfire Service mobile app on any Android or iOS device and set “Saved Locations” notifications to be notified in real-time of wildfire activity within a selected geographic area. The photos and geographic information that British Columbians have been submitting this summer using the “Report” feature have been incredibly helpful to our staff and we want to thank public for being our partners in wildfire detection. You can also report a wildfire via the phone at 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 from a cell phone.
To help prevent human caused wildfires and protect public safety, campfires remain prohibited throughout the Coastal Fire Centre, with the exception of the Haida Gwaii Forest District. The campfire prohibition does not include the use of outdoor stoves. As per the Wildfire Regulation, an outdoor stove is a CSA-rated or ULC-rated device used outdoors for cooking, heat or ambiance that burns charcoal briquettes, liquid fuel or gaseous fuel, and has a flame height that is less than 15 cm tall. Category 2 and 3 open burning remains prohibited for the entire province.
