NIWA field trip on May 21

Dear Members,

Please be invited to NIWA’s first field trip in 2022 (and after a long pause of in person meetings) to a uniquely managed woodland and woodlot licence area in West Courtenay. Allen Hopwood has managed the woodlot licence area at Forbidden Plateau since 1995 under an irregular shelterwood regime that for most parts maintains a permanent forest cover. His operation had been FSC certified in the year 2000 and received recognition from environmental groups, First Nations and industry authorities. Allen has retired from his professional career as a consulting forester and is now enjoying the hands-on forestry in the private woodland and woodlot licence area close to his home.

When: Saturday, May 21 at 10:00 AM

Where: 5501 Forbidden Plateau Rd., Courtenay

The field trip is expected to last 2 hours. Please enter the drive way, drive straight through and park in a big landing down the road in the woodlot. Below is a map for how to get there.

Hope to see you all again!

Yours,

Wolfram Wollenheit,

NIWA President
